Position Overview:  
Under the direct supervision of the Athletic Director, the SID serves as an institutional representative to the media for all athletic activities. Plans, organizes, and coordinates media relations activities; writes and distributes newsletters, brochures, and reports to television and radio stations, newspapers, and magazines; responds to various requests for team histories, photos, statistics, and related information. Understands the organizational culture, the role of athletics within the Nelson community, and a willingness to consistently perpetuate and display the mission of Nelson through actions and words with athletes, coaches, university personnel and the public.  
 
Major Responsibilities:  
  • Cover Sports information for various sporting events
  • Keep statistics for selected sports team
  • Write game notes for home events 
  • Update information on website 
  • Game operations responsibilities throughout the sports calendar year
  • Designs, writes, and oversees the production of printed promotional materials including catalogs, brochures, flyers, and program and media guides.
  • Writes and edits promotional materials including press releases, newsletters, programs, and brochures; gathers and compiles statistical information.
  • Responds to requests for information from media personnel and the public; distributes promotional materials, including flyers, brochures
  • Manages and operates all social Media accounts attached to the Athletics Website
  • Provides information to representatives of the opponent's sports information office about the team, including updating starting lineups.
  • Organizes and supervises photo sessions for all sports to provide head and shoulder photos of athletes and posed action shots

Qualifications:

Education:  
  1. Bachelor’s Degree is required. 
  2. Masters preferred.  
Experience and Knowledge:  
  1. Playing experience and/or student assistant experience in respective sport.  
  2. High school or 1-3 years intercollegiate coaching experience.  

Skills and Abilities:  
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
